Q : Please simply explain the businesses of Korea Advanced Nano Fab Center?

A : The construction project of Korea Advanced Nano Fab forms a part of the constriction project of thenational core research infra carried out by the Ministry of Science and Technology. The project aims at constructing and operating equipment and facilities in the field of nano device technology which will be able to support research & development of the source technology and advanced industrialization thereof. Gyeonggi-do and KIST have had charge of the project, and in addition, 6 consortiums composed by Seoul National University, Hanyang University, Ajou University, Sungkyunkwan University and KETI (Korean Electronics Technology Institute) have been detained in the R&D park located in Iui-dong, Suwon.

Q : What services are available at the Korea Advanced Nano Fab Center?

A : Our center is now constructing a Fab Center for the purpose of performing batch processing service as to compound semiconductor-based nano electronic device/nano optical device and performing R&D support processing service as to the whole non-silicon nano device. It is planned that the batch processing service will mainly deal with devices of GaAs, GaN, InP systems, and the R&D support processing service will deal with not only compound semiconductor device but also new devices such as magnetic device, molecule device, carbon nano tube device.
In addition to the processing services, Specific Character Estimation Room to support various measuring and analyzing work and Equipment Development Support Room to support development of up-to-date nano processing equipment and measurement equipment will be separately operated.
The time to start regular support service by completing construction of Fab Center is scheduled to the end of December, 2005.

Q : What is nano technology?

A : Nano technology calls collectively science and technology that can operate, analyze and control material at the atom level (10-9m). Nanometer is 1/1000,000,000 meter, and that is to easily say, it is generally 1/1000,000,000 of the sickness of a hair.
Nano technology has two methods that one method is Top-Down method proposed by an American physicist Dr. Feynman, and the other method is Bottom-Up method proposed by a MIT student Mr. Drexler: Top-Down method is the method to subdivide big material to small things of atom or molecule size by cutting
Bottom-Up method is the method to make specific sized thing by cumulating small things of atom or molecule size.
Semiconductor chip is a representative example of Top-Down method, and it means a struggle toraise degree of integration by arranging how thin lines within fixed level. We can store a number of hundreds mega at a fingernail sized chip. It is also possible to perform a surgical operation without bleeding by inserting a robot mounted with micro motor into a body.
The technology handling carbon atom is a representative example of Bottom-Up method, and it can make both coal and diamond depending on the method of combination. In addition, both protein and medicine can be made depending on the form of compounding carbon and nitrogen.
Like this, nano technology is not a imaginary mallet of luck in our dream, but an up-to-date technology of the future which is shown up in the real world.

Q : What kinds of representative nano device are?

A : There are LD/LED,PD/PT, Nano CMOS integrated circuit, Nano image censor, Nano chemical/Mechanical device, Nano quantum device and energy conversion device (solar battery).

Q : What are the examples that nano technology appears in our daily life?

A : Nano cosmetics and soaps such as Skin Care product group are the products thatcan easily deliver efficacy to deep inside of skin because nano particles can pass through skin cells by using cosmetics particles of 30~40nm which are smaller than the space between skin cells of 74nm.
Nano silver milk bottle, Nano refrigerator and Nano air conditioner are coated with silver particles of nano size having functions of antibiosis, deodorization and preservation which use properties of nano particles that are more uniformly and efficiently coated on the surface than the existing other particles.
Opticalcatalyst, which is recently highlighted in regards to New House Syndrome,
by processing TiO2 into nano particles, it applies prevention of cars getting steamed, and effects of purification, antibiosis and sterilization of air in apartments by utilizing nano particles’ properties of antibiosis, antipollution, flame retardant, prevention of forming water and purification of air.

Q : According to establishment of Korea Advanced Nano Fab Center in Suwon, what economic and social ripple effects have influence on the Suwon area of Gyeonggi-do?

A : Gyeonggi-do is the center place of nano technology development in Korea where 54% of nano technology related businesses are active and 40 universities and research institutes actively develop nano technology.
At the ground-breaking ceremony of the center, the governor of Gyeonggi-do, Son Hak Gyu emphasized that the establishment of our center has not only the meaning of establishing the center place of nano technology but also the meaning of technology innovation type cluster’s birth accompanying with Pangyo venture area by full-scale forming up-to-date R&D area in the whole Iui-dong of Suwon, Gyeonggi-do.
If we start regular R&D support service once the construction of Korea Advanced Nano Fab Center is completed, the following economic·social effects are expected:
Firstly, the center will perform its role as a key position of the domestic nano technology so that it will be possible to provide the industry, academic and research communities with total support to R&D of nano technology.
Secondly, although Korea is a powerful country regarding semiconductor, our compound semiconductor industry has been weak. We will construct infra to develop compound semiconductorindustry to foster the industry as a motive power of the future growth.
Thirdly, by constructing research·venture buildings, it will be possible to provide service supporting R&D of small and medium·venture businesses that form the main stream of the domestic compound semiconductor industry. Accordingly, we expect that it will contribute to strengthen the competitiveness of the domestic businesses.
Lastly, we expect that it will also contribute to train men of high ability through One Stop Service by connecting education infra of metropolitan area with the facilities of Korea Advanced Nano Fab Center based on the inter cooperation of the government and the institutes participating in this project.

Q : What is the organization and function of Advisory Committee?

A : Advisory Committee consists of Construction Advisory Committee and Equipment Advisory Committee. Within 20-30 members among specialists of the industry, academic and research communities with great experience and knowledge in the filed of nano technology organize the Advisory Committee and they function to provide political and technological consultation as to the filed of nano technology equipment and center construction business.
